A New Dawn in Space Exploration
With the dawn of the 21st century, mankind has turned its gaze towards the stars. From the first steps on the moon to the latest mission on Mars, our species’ thirst for knowledge and exploration has been unquenchable. And right at the heart of this cosmic odyssey is Spaceport America, a testament to human ambition and technological innovation.
About: Spaceport America
The Dream Takes Flight
Spaceport America is more than just a launch site; it’s a symbol of mankind’s unyielding spirit of exploration. Situated in the scenic landscape of New Mexico, it’s the first facility of its kind, built specifically for launching commercial spacecraft. It’s the place where science fiction meets reality, where dreams take flight, and the impossible becomes the everyday.
What is Spaceport America
In the United States, a Spaceport is an entity licensed by the Secretary of Transportation through the FAA for the purpose of launch or re-entry. Spaceport America, located about 20 miles southeast of Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences, is the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, launching both horizontally and vertically. While the first of its kind, Spaceport America is in good company as there are nearly 20 other spaceports in the U.S. and roughly 100 worldwide.
What is Spaceport America’s MIssion?
Spaceport’s mission is multifaceted: (1) Create the statutory framework needed to ensure the facility operates efficiently, (2) facilitate city, county and state growth through the development of the facility; (3) create a variety of jobs by attracting and growing new industries and businesses, and (4) promote education and workforce training to develop skills needed to support Spaceport operations.
Why was New Mexico Chosen as Spaceport’s Location?
There are several reasons why New Mexico was selected as the site for Spaceport America, including low population, 340+ days of sunshine, high elevation, no salt-air corrosion, access to 6,000 square miles of restricted White Sands Missile Range airspace and access to assets from White Sands and Alamogordo bases.
A Guiding Light: Scott McLaughlin
A Passion for Progress
At the helm of this audacious project is Scott McLaughlin, a New Mexico native with a most impressive resume, which includes key positions at White Sands Missile Range, NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Spaceport America. Having worked in government as well as private sectors, Scott is well versed in the challenges and benefits of both, allowing him to better navigate through difficult operational challenges and red tape.
Dealing with Skepticism: It’s a New Day.
Just like any revolutionary endeavor, Spaceport America has been met with a fair share of skepticism, particularly since it was launch worthy in 2010 but saw little activity for years. But Scott McLaughlin remains undeterred, committed to addressing these concerns head-on, sharing what lies on the horizon for Spaceport America and its tenants. And what lies on the horizon is nothing short of inspiring!
Spaceport America: What’s Happening Now?
On the Launch Pad: Current Projects
The prestigious tenants at Spaceport America are all actively pursuing tests and operations, albeit quite different from one another. Virgin Galactic will begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2023 and suborbital passenger flights in the fourth quarter; AeroVironment/HAPSMobile is developing and testing a sci-fi-looking 260’-wingspan airplane that can fly to 80,000 feet; SpinLaunch, with the largest span vacuum chamber ever built, has conducted 9 successful centrifuge-launched test satellites to date; and UP Aerospace had had 15 successful launches since 2006, including successfully launching the SL-16 rocket in August of 2021, which was the third successful separation and re-entry mission by UP Aerospace.
But that’s not all! There’s a whole host of exciting initiatives on the horizon. Stay tuned for more updates about what’s in store for Spaceport America.
