The Story Behind the Footprints
The Legend Begins: Steve Gentry and Bigfoot Restaurant
Owned and operated by the very talented Steve Gentry, Bigfoot Restaurant sprouted its roots in the early 2000s. Strategically positioned close to I-25 and just around the corner from Elephant Butte Lake State Park, this humble establishment has since grown into a beloved and popular culinary destination. Whether you’re a local, a lake enthusiast, or an I-25 traveler, Big Foot Restaurant has a seat waiting for you.
The Tale of the Big Foot Statue
Gentry’s journey is an intriguing one. Starting from the east coast, where he was raised and attended college, Steve did a 180, moving across county to the west coast, settling in sunny California. That’s where he stumbled upon and purchased a towering Big Foot statue, artfully carved from a mighty redwood. With this majestic statue in hand and with guidance from his uncle regarding opening and manageing a restaurant, Steve moved once again – this time to Elephant Butte where he debuted Big Foot Restaurant. The name is no surprise – the Big Foot carving he transported across country makes the perfect eye-catching icon and a distinctive name for the restaurant.
As an interesting side note, in 2017 a Facebook post announced that Bigfoot was found dead at Elephant Butte Lake. While a hoax, the post, which closely resembled a genuine news story, drew a lot of attention. There was, however, a complete prehistoric Stegamastodon skull and tusks found at the lake in 2014 by some party goers!
