A Glimpse into the City of Truth or Consequences
Steeped in historical and cultural heritage, the city of Truth or Consequences is noted for its world-class hot springs. The city’s reputation as a fine art destination is rapidly growing as well, as evidenced by an intriguing monthly celebration known as the Truth or Consequences Second Saturday Art Hop.
Collaboration in Creativity: The Participating Entities
Brimming with talent and creativity, the local art galleries and many other businesses open their doors from 6-9pm every second Saturday of the month for this fun event. It’s a unique, charming initiative that promotes the community’s many talented artists and their works. Shops and galleries echo with laughter, discussions, and a variety of live music. The vibrant atmosphere is infectious, and a sense of unity permeates the air.
Unearthing Artistic Passions: Second Saturday Art Hop
As dusk falls every second Saturday, regardless of the weather, downtown Truth or Consequences opens it doors to welcome locals and visitors. The Second Saturday Art Hop, which made its debut in July 2005, has grown to become a highly anticipated and well-attended event. For some, like Marianne Blaue and John Masteron, owners of Truth or Consequences Brewing Company, attending Art Hop was life changing as it was the catalyst that caused them to move from Washington State to open the brewery, now a popular stop for Art Hop attendees.
Art Appreciation in Action: Galleries and Guests
With eight galleries offering a wide variety of paintings, photographs, sculpture, jewelry and more, Art Hop brings art lovers and those who are simply curious together with local gallery owners and artists to explore, learn and share thoughts. It’s also an opportunity for guests to develop a new or deeper appreciation for the area’s talented artists and for the artists to learn what art collectors and casual buyers are looking for.
Galleries are located on Main Street, Foch and Broadway, forming a triangular walking route that makes it easy to “hop” from one gallery to another.
Retail and Revelry: Shops during the Art Hop
Not limited to art alone, some of the commercial district shops join in the Art Hop festivities. They open their doors to give shoppers the unique opportunity to shop at their leisure on a Saturday evening.
A Festive Fusion: Food, Drinks, and More
To top it off, the event does not shy away from indulging other senses. It provides a fabulous blend of tantalizing food, refreshing drinks, and rhythmic music, and, at times, street performers, ensuring a memorable night for everyone.
Galleries graciously offer delectable finger foods and refreshments to their guests and some even set up grills onsite to offer brats and hot dogs. Regardless of the offerings, you’ll feel more than welcome by owners, staff and artists alike. And with Truth or Consequences Brewing Company on the Art Hop route, you can enjoy amazing craft beers and entertainment before, during or after your Art Hop tour.
Things to Do Before Art Hop
There’s plenty to keep you busy while you’re waiting for the evening’s Second Saturday Art Hop activities. Soaking in one of the many hot springs or taking advantage of rejuvenating spa services are great choices, as are relaxing over a memorable meal at one of T or C’s many restaurants. For a more adventurous experience, try tubing down the Rio Grande; boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, jet skiing or fishing at Elephant Butte Lake State Park; taking a Spaceport America tour; exploring one of the nearby ghost towns; visiting Geronimo Springs Museum, Veteran’s Memorial Park and Hamilton Military Museum; or heading to Sierra County’s mesas and mountains to hike, bike or explore via an OHV.
Why You Can’t Miss the Second Saturday Art Hop
A local tradition, the Second Saturday Art Hop is a work of art in itself. Since its inception in 2005, it has fostered a sense of community, supported local businesses, and celebrated the city’s unique artistic culture.
Make sure to mark your calendars and join the city of Truth or Consequences for its next Second Saturday Art Hop. This event isn’t just an art hop – it’s a heartbeat, and everyone is invited to join the rhythm of this unique event that continues to nurture community spirit, stimulate the local economy, and most importantly, celebrate the arts.
