Introduction
The RWGA (Roadrunners Women’s Golf Association) is a vibrant group of women who love to golf, socialize and cultivate enduring friendships. And while their home course is Sierra del Rio in Elephant Butte, New Mexico, some RWGA members drive from Las Cruces and Albuquerque to join in the fun – a clear indication that this is an amazing group of women!
What it Means to be an RWGA Member
Seriously Fun Golf and Camaraderie
Roadrunners (RWGA members) take the game of golf seriously, but not themselves. When they’re golfing, they do their best to excel while also sharing stories, laughing, encouraging each other, and tossing out their favorite golf acronyms, most of which are quite hysterical! And when the round is over, the fun continues at Sierra del Rio’s Turtleback Taphouse & Grill, where the round’s winnings are shared and conversations, stories, laughter and fun continue, sometimes for hours!
Weekly Play and “The Game”
Members typically golf at least once a week, with Fridays dedicated to the “Official Playday” during which players can accumulate points for end-of-the-year prizes. Playday always offers up an element of surprise, thanks to RWGA President Linda Hale’s creative mind. Players don’t know what “the game” is until they arrive, making it fun to find out what the day’s rules are. The goal is to make the game both fun and challenging while giving players of all skill levels an opportunity to capture the week’s winnings, which, if you’re lucky, might cover your first beer!
Tournament Play
Members are actively involved in Border Tournaments, which typically draw about 100 competitors from Southwest New Mexico; El Paso, TX; and Juarez, Mexico. These tournaments are a great way for Roadrunners to play competitively while building new friendships and having fun with fellow Roadrunner members. One of those border tournaments – the RWGA Red or Green Invitational, is hosted by the Roadrunners at Sierra del Rio and is quite the event! Roadrunners also host a member-only tournament – the annual President’s Cup and Shootout – at Sierra del Rio. This two-day eclectic event brings members and supporters together for two days of tournament play, with a separate 9-hole Shootout after tournament play on the first day, culminating with the winner crowned Shootout Queen!
New Members Welcome!
New members, whether golf or social, are readily welcomed. If you’re joining as a golf member, relax – you’ll fit right in, even if you’re just learning the game. Still nervous? How about a “test run”. You can play a round to see what RWGA is all about. Once you do, you’ll be more than ready to join! And if you’re joining as a social member, get ready to make some wonderful new friends and have a lot of fun.
Leadership with a Smile
Every great organization requires great leadership and RWGA is no exception. The fun-loving and exceptionally talented golfer, Linda Hale, serves as President. Her love of the game, attention to detail, quick wit, patience, and encouraging nature help make her the exceptional leader that she is. Susan Taylor serves as Vice President, Denise Barrera is the Treasurer and Sharon Frye is the Secretary. Susan, Denise, and Sharon are all as dedicated as Linda, applying their many talents to all that they do, always with the best interests of the organization and its members at heart, and always with a smile. Several members choose to participate by joining committees, and with several to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect fit.
RWGA’s Home Course
Sierra del Rio at Turtleback Mountain Resort in Elephant Butte serves as the Roadrunner’s home course. While challenging with its winding fairways and tiered greens, the course is enjoyable for all skill levels. Recently purchased by PreRealTM Investments, LLC, Sierra del Rio is undergoing major improvements, not just on the course but the clubhouse, bar and patio as well. The course has always attracted golfers from a multi-state area and will be even more of a destination once PreRealTM has completed the many improvements and amenities it has planned.
Conclusion
Whether you’re new to the game, new to the area, or an experienced golfer, it’s time to surround yourself with a group of fun-loving women and enjoy some great rounds of golf. And if you simply would like to join as a social member, the doors are wide open. You’ll enjoy the camaraderie, the laughter, and the many fun, informative meetings and events throughout the year!
