If you’re familiar with Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, you’ve likely heard the names Marianne Blaue and John Masterson. As the owners of both T or C Brewing and SideKixx, this talented couple has made a significant impact on the local entertainment and dining scene.
The Journey to Truth or Consequences
Seattle to New Mexico
Marianne and John’s story starts in Seattle, where the couple worked in the tech industry but dreamed of the day when they would live in a more remote, warm and dry environment. In 2015, they flew into Albuquerque as tourists, rented a car and headed down I-25 on their way to a B&B vacation in Silver City. Enroute, they pulled into Truth or Consequences (T or C) where they discovered hot springs, cafes and art galleries in this city with such an unusual name. And that’s where our story begins.
The Spark of an Idea – From Art Hop to Hops
As Marianne and John reviewed the Sierra County Artists booklet, they learned about the Art Hop every second Saturday. They decided it might be fun to head back to T or C after their stay in Silver City to catch the Art Hop. And so they did. And in the midst of gallery hopping, gallery offerings of wine and cheese, street performers, and interesting conversations with an eclectic mix of locals and visitors, they became charmed by the town. The next day they walked by a real estate office and felt they must find a way to live in T or C, possibly as a second home. Deciding to sit down over a beer and talk about it, they found there was no place in downtown T or C to get a beer. And that’s the spark that changed everything.
Serious About T or C and Serious About Beer
An avid home brewer with a significant brew system and a local brewing award to his name, John was ready to take brewing to the next level. Couple that with the high cost of living in Seattle and limited quality of life due to 80-hr-per-week jobs, both John and Marianne were ready to open a new chapter. In their lives. In the spring of 2016, the couple purchased a building at 410 North Broadway in Truth or Consequences with the intent of converting it into a modern brewery. With the help of Black Range Construction, the architectural plans came together and work on the building commenced. Meanwhile, John enrolled in community college in Albuquerque to learn the commercial brewing process.
The Birth of Truth or Consequences Brewing
First Steps
Marianne and John opened the doors to T or C Brewing on June 9, 2017, serving craft beers made by other breweries. Meanwhile, John was busy piecing together everything he needed to brew their own beer on a large scale, relying on his connections with brewers in Seattle to help him source and secure the parts and pieces needed to build the brew systems.
Cosmic Blond is Born
John’s first attempt at brewing was, in his words, a failure, but on August 21st of 2017, John knew he had brewed to perfection on the same day as the Great American Eclipse, thus the name Cosmic Blond, which John and Marianne introduced in September of that year. And with that first brew, John and Marianne forever changed the local beer scene in Truth or Consequences.
An Ever-Growing Selection
Over time, John has developed an impressive selection of craft beers, ensuring the brewery offers something for every beer lover while showcasing their passion for brewing and innovative flavors. For example, Airstream Ultra, super light and low in calories and alcohol, was born out of a request from some local cowboys for Bud Light. Today, T or C Brewing offers wide selection, including their Buckhorn IPA and Street Taco Lager, two of their most popular brews, along with a variety of seasonal beers, all with names relating to space or places. And because John, the company’s Chief Beer Officer, and Jacob Rhoades, Lead Brewer, love to experiment, brewery guests will continue to find new beers to sample from what is now a very extensive menu.
Great Water, Great Brews
It takes great water to make great brews. The drinking water in T or C is definitely great but the cocktail of minerals in the water isn’t conducive for beer, which is why John and Jacob make custom water for each beer they brew. They strip the minerals from the water and then add the right minerals in the right amounts and mixes back into the water. This process allows them to fine tune their brews by, for example, creating a more full-bodied experience or accentuating crispness. It’s like brewing with varieties of fancy water. The results speak for themselves.
Expanding the Business
A Satellite Location in Las Cruces
In 2019, Marianne set her sights on a second location, choosing to open a small beer cafe not far from New Mexico State University. Doors opened in early 2020 only to close for to-go only orders just two weeks later due to Covid. Today, the café is open and thriving thanks to the dedicated team Marianne trained and put in place. Plus, it serves as a great way to introduce guests to what awaits them in Truth or Consequences.
Introducing SideKixx
Marianne didn’t stop there. Having been in survival mode during covid, she wanted to get excited about the future – something bigger than originally planned and something that felt more like a community center, a place where food, events, bands, dancing and beer all converge into one popular destination for both locals and tourists. It all came together when she and John purchased the local bowling alley and bar, which they named SideKixx, now a popular destination for family fun, adult nights out, meetups, parties, great conversations and so much more.
The Delicious Sidekixx Menu
SideKixx offers a delectable menu that pairs perfectly with T or C Brewing’s beer selection. From mouthwatering pizzas and wings to other shareables, there’s something for everyone at Sidekixx.
