Introduction: The Soul of Our City
Every town has its beating heart. It pulses through the streets, in the laughter and stories of its people and within its cherished landmarks. For us, that heart is the El Cortez Movie Theater. Are you curious about the tale behind its marquee lights? Let’s unravel the story together.
El Cortez Movie Theater: An Interesting History
A treasured local landmark, the El Cortez movie theater is recognized as one of the last theaters in the country to show 35-millimeter films. The theater isn’t merely a building with popcorn and projectors. It’s a time capsule of shared memories, a beacon of local culture, and a testament to our community’s spirit of resilience. Built in 1933 with a seating capacity of 583, the theater was open for only ten years when a gas explosion blew out the front portion of the theater. The damage was repaired and the theater reopened but eventually closed again for many years, finally reopening again in 1995 and then purchased by a group of four partners, including Sid Bryan, in 2021.
Sid Bryan: The Guardian of Our Memories
At the helm of the theater’s revival is Sid Bryan, a man whose love for his community is intertwined with his business foresight. Sid is more than the theater’s co-owner; he’s our neighbor, a Realtor, a steward of several properties, and a philanthropist.
The Dream: A New Dawn for El Cortez Movie Theater
What led Sid Bryan and his partners to this architectural gem? It wasn’t just a business venture; it was a dream. A dream to safeguard a piece of our collective past and transform it into a thriving destination – an iconic landmark that brings locals and tourists to downtown Truth or Consequences.
Bumps on the Road: The Struggles
The path to reviving a movie theater isn’t lined with red carpets. Sid and his partners have faced many challenges, including the need to close during the Covid crisis. Additionally, while the hope was to show only first-run movies, the cost has proven to be an obstacle. None the less, the El Cortez will showcase both commercial and art house movies and is looking for other opportunities to expand program offerings.
El Cortez: A Film Festival Debut
New Mexico’s booming film industry includes a number of movies filmed in the southern part of the state. As the number of those films grows, so does the call for more and more film festivals in New Mexico’s southern region. El Cortez partners met the call by introducing a three-day Film Fiesta in October of 2022. The festival offered guests a variety of activities, including raffles, a movie warehouse auction, screenings, panels, special guest appearances and after parties.
The Community: The Lifeline
Community support is the lifeline of the theater – people who line up for movies, share nostalgic memories, and turn out for special events. And to ensure that individuals and families can head to the theater for all their favorite movie releases, the partners are committed to keeping the price of admission and concessions as low as possible.
The Ascent: What’s on the Horizon for El Cortez Movie Theater?
Wondering about the next act in this grand performance? Let’s raise the curtain and offer you a glimpse into the future. Sid and his partners dream of the El Cortez as more than a cinema; they see an ever-growing center of community interaction – a place where laughter and applause fill the air, painting a vibrant picture of unity and togetherness. Perhaps in the future we’ll see another film festival, stand-up comedy, music acts, plays, talent shows and concerts. One thing is for sure. The future is bright and the possibilities are endless!
Be There: The Power of Presence
There’s no support like physical presence. So be there. Show up for a movie, an event, or any activity they host. Your presence is more than a ticket sale; it’s a vote of confidence and an affirmation of the theater’s place in our community.
